Important roadworks information – A421 Elstow to Cardington – Drain Hotspot Renewal
National Highways have alerted the Parish Council to let us know about ongoing work on the A421 between the Elstow and Cardington junctions. They sent apologies that this update is coming after work has already started – they wanted to make sure everyone is aware of what’s happening and the upcoming closures.
They are carrying out repairs and replacement to the road drainage system. Once complete, this will help water drain more effectively and reduce the risk of flooding on the road and in nearby areas.
They are planning to complete this work over approx. 14 weeks from Monday 13 April to Friday 17 July 2026. We’ll be working overnight between 8pm and 6am on weeknights, as well as some weekend nights, as detailed below, weather permitting.
A421 westbound – A603 Cardington to A6 Elstow:
- Monday 13 April to Friday 8 May (weeknights)
- Saturday 30 to Sunday 31 May (weekend overnight)
- Saturday 6 to Sunday 7 June (weekend overnight)
- Wednesday 10 June to Friday 17 July (weeknights)
A421 westbound – A4280 Renhold to A1603 Cardington:
- Monday 11 to Friday 15 May (weeknights)
Closures and diversions
To carry out the work safely, they will need to close the A421 and divert traffic as follows:
Westbound A603 Cardington junction to A6 Elstow junction
- Traffic will be diverted eastbound to Renhold junction, then exit onto the A4280.
- Then travel west on Goldington Road, continue travelling on A4280 Bromham Road.
- Then follow the A6 (The Branston Way) to rejoin the A421 at the Marsh Leys junction.
Westbound A4280 Renhold junction to A603 Cardington junction
- Traffic will exit onto the A4280 at Renhold junction
- Then travel west on Goldington Road, continue travelling on A4280 Bromham Road.
- Then follow the A6 (The Branston Way) to rejoin the A421 at the Marsh Leys junction.
Please note emergency vehicles will have access through the works with caution.
