September 2026 HL

BedsGOVT have added that something of a mixed bag this month.  Nitrates still poor overall but slightly improved over August.  But Phosphates are both poor results and worse than last month, especially in the downstream stretches, which suggests an urban/road run off source rather than agriculture. Both of these, plus sun accounts for the algae, duck weed and silk weed that are clear to see.  Ammonia remains generally benign, with only Allen Bridge (just downstream from Bedford Sewage Works) showing a very poor result.   E.coli remains disappointing but shows a slight improvement over the month.

Please note the difference between Twin Bridges and Heron Quay, two new test locations U/S and D/S of a problematic outfall identified in our  Outfall Safari programme.  The upstream results are poor but the downstream results are much worse.  We believe that this is the result of one or more misconnections in what is an older part of town, built at a time when the concept of segregating sewage and rainwater drainage did not exist.
